“So, what exactly is Vaporwave?”

Vaporwave is an electronic music microgenre and visual aesthetic built around nostalgia, digital culture, and the imagery of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Its music often features slowed, chopped, and manipulated samples of smooth jazz, R&B, lounge, elevator music, and commercial media.
Visually, vaporwave draws from early internet imagery, 1980s and 1990s advertising, retro computer graphics, anime, glitch art, classical sculpture, neon cityscapes, 3D-rendered objects, and obsolete technology.
The culture surrounding vaporwave can also carry an ironic or surreal critique of consumer culture, corporate optimism, and idealized visions of the future, often transforming familiar media from previous decades into something dreamlike and uncanny.
Together, these elements create a nostalgic experience that feels simultaneously familiar, distant, comforting, and surreal—like remembering a past that may never have existed quite the way you remember it.
